The time spent on researching these dynasties can be improved by capturing additional settlements, with major settlements providing larger research boosts, over minor settlements. To the right of that is your predicted income next turn, try to keep this in the green or you won’t be able to fund your armies! They will also have Skirmish Mode enabled, this means they will keep themselves at a safe distance from the enemy and not engage in melee. Armies at sea which are close to such encounters may be able to plunder them for rewards. This grants them full visibility over the campaign map territory of any faction they have agreed trade with – trade agreements with other factions can be made via diplomacy.
